The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart is also showing well, displaying an attractive bouquet of cherries, dark chocolate and pungent soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate with nice concentration and depth. I much enjoyed this tasting with the Domaine du Clos de Tart´s Jacques Desvauges. He has produced a very fine 2017, and his 2016 lives up to the immense promise it showed from barrel. While the wines of the Pitiot era were always correct, Desvauges has been harvesting a little earlier, using a touch less new oak and working with appreciable percentages of whole clusters—and the result is wines of considerably more aromatic range, textural elegance and—in the final analysis—quite simply more emotion than anything hitherto produced in what one might call this estate´s modern era. And that´s great news for Burgundy.

A discreet application of wood sets off the ripe and very fresh aromas of various dark berries that are nuanced by hints of earth and violet. The sleek and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess good intensity and a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a solidly complex and sneaky long finish. This should drink well young if that´s your preference while offering 6 to 8 years of development potential.

From the three youngest parcels in the clos, the 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru has a fragrant blackberry and briar bouquet plus light pressed iris aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, displaying touches of licorice on the entry, and nicely balanced with hints of graphite toward the finish. Fine.
