Healthy dark red. Deeper, more soil-inflected nose than the Cuvée des Grives, hinting at black raspberry and smoke. Dense, saline and deep if tighter in its grain than the Cuvée des Grives. This very rich, full, soil-driven wine finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins and terrific slowly building length and lift. Very much like a smaller-scaled Clos de la Roche.

The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes is deeper and more serious than the Cuvée des Grives, wafting from the glass with a lavish bouquet of ripe plum, cherry, cinnamon, licorice, rich soil and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, sappy and powerful, with a deep core of sweet fruit that conceals an ample chassis of fine-grained, chalky tannin. As readers will likely be aware, Laurent Ponsot left the Domaine Ponsot in 2017. His sister Rose-Marie Ponsot, co-director of the domaine since 1997, is now sole director, seconded by Alexandre Abel. Laurent Ponsot retains his 25% share in the Domaine Ponsot landholding company but is no longer involved in its management. Since the domaine´s métayage contract with the Domaine des Chézeaux were in Laurent´s name, inherited from the late Jean-Marie Ponsot in 1999, those holdings—in Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, the Clos Saint-Denis and Le Chambertin—will now be exploited by Laurent Ponsot´s new enterprise. Though the 2016 vintage from these parcels was farmed and harvested by the Domaine Ponsot team and vinified at the Ponsot winery, the resulting wines will be sold under Laurent Ponsot´s label. It also appears likely that the source of the domaine´s Montrachet will supply those grapes to Laurent Ponsot in the future. The rest of the domaine´s appellations remain intact, and there is no indication that any other changes in the vineyards or the winery are afoot. Turning to the Ponsot 2015s, these are very successful wines that exemplify Ponsot´s expansive, late-picked style. This is one of Burgundy´s most distinctive aesthetics, but there is no denying the wines´ quality or long-proven capacity to age. Readers can expect a feature on the domaine´s Clos de la Roche in the near future.

A mild touch of reduction pushes the fruit to the background for the present. By contrast there is an excellent sense of verve to the muscular and mineral-driven flavors that possess fine delineation on the dusty, firm and balanced finale where the supporting tannins make it clear that this is very much built-to-age; that said this is not at all rustic or austere.
