The brilliant 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes offers up an incipiently complex bouquet of dark berry fruit, orange rind, plums, woodsmoke, dark chocolate and rich soil tones. On the palate, it´s medium to full-bodied, reserved and muscular, with excellent depth and concentration, structured around an ample endowment of powdery tannin and succulent acids. The finish is long and nicely defined. As is almost invariably the case, this is a serious wine for the long haul, and it numbers among the wines of the vintage in the Côte de Beaune.

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a lilting bouquet of red cherry, cranberry and raspberry aromas with chalky notes tucked in just underneath. The palate is the most structured of Lafarge’s 2018s, displaying fine grip but comparable elegance that defines the finish. There is real succulence here, and wonderful persistence, plus a little bitterness that keeps you coming back for another sip. Outstanding. Drinking Window 2023 - 2050

A brooding and reserved nose very reluctantly displays its relatively deeply pitched aromas of highly complex poached plum, dark cherry and whiff of warm earth. As is always the case, the concentrated and powerful flavors are considerably bigger with excellent richness and muscle where evident minerality adds a sense of lift to the mouth coating and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. As it usually is, this beauty is the biggest wine in the range and one that is built to age for decades to come.
