A beautifully layered nose reluctantly offers up a pretty if brooding array of plum, spice, game, earth and soft oak nuances. The supple yet punchy and overtly powerful broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent density while delivering first-rate persistence on the sappy finish that really firms up as it sits on the palate. Impressive, ageworthy and a bit less austere at this early stage than usual.
The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru showed just a little reduction on the nose, but that blows away with modest swirling to reveal blackberries, raspberry coulis, touches of melted tar and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. It displays a fine crescendo in the mouth, until it reaches the effervescent finish. A tang of blood orange and brown spice lingers on the aftertaste.
