A magical wine in the making, Bachelet's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with complex aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet soil tones, bergamot, peonies and violets. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's sumptuous and enveloping, with a broad and textural attack that segues into an ample, multidimensional and beautifully vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a long and perfumed finish.
A perfumed nose features notes of various red berries, especially cherry, along with hints of wood, anise, violet and a hint of game. The equally sleek but markedly richer larger-scaled flavors possess a seductive mouthfeel thanks to the abundant dry extract that coats the palate and largely buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the hugely long and naturally sweet finale. This is really lovely stuff and it wouldn't surprise me if my projected range was proven to be too conservative in time.
