The 1999 Romanee-St-Vivant initially has its nose put out of joint by the precocious 1999 Echezeaux, but allowing the wine to unfold over 30 to 40 minutes, it shows its true breeding. Returning after ten minutes, the nose positively explodes from the glass with a sorbet-like purity – hints of wild strawberry, cassis and a little blueberry – a piercing intensity that is wondrous to behold. The palate is medium-bodied and does not have the volume of the 1999 Echezeaux, but there is superior clarity and focus, the tannins clearly fine and the finish shimmering with tension and femininity. This is just a beautiful wine that will only get better. Drink 2016-2030.

A highly expressive nose of remarkably dense aromas featuring classic Vosne spice and crushed blackberries leads to full-bodied and very sappy medium-bodied flavors that display a terrific inner core of complexity and still more spice on the hugely long finish. The purity of extract displayed here is mind bending and this is unquestionably the finest DRC Romanée St.-Vivant in many a vintage. The '99 would appear to support the Domaine's contention that all the vineyard work they've done is paying off. A great vintage for this wine and it's very clearly still on the way up. For my taste while this could be drunk now with a great deal of pleasure it's still at least 5 years away from its full peak and 7 to 10 years is not out of the question. In sum I will not be opening the bottles that I own for several more years. Consistent and multiple notes.

The DRC 1999s have always been so dark and backward and the RC remains so. But as it opens after a few hours in the glass, the muscle and power begins to show the magic with licorice, crushed stone, flower petal, oyster shell, iodine, and blackberry on both the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied and so powerful with muscular tannins which are totally integrated. This may live forever if kept properly. Mind-blowing. Drink or hold.
