The 2020 Marsannay Au Champ Salomon wafts from the glass with scents of dark wild berries mingled with peonies, orange zest, sweet spices, dark chocolate and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit, powdery tannins and lively acids, it's a seamless, complete wine that shows just how great Marsannay can be.
Cyril Audoin has turned in another superb performance in the 2020 vintage, delivering wines of perfume, energy and precision that transcend stereotypes of their appellation. Marsannay nourishes a number of high-quality domaines, and the village offers rich pickings for wine lovers, but Audoin might well be my favorite. What's more, anyone who laments rising prices in the Côte d'Or should take note of the terrific value this estate's wines represent, because quality at this level should honestly cost quite a bit more.
A beautifully spicy nose reflects top notes of a variety of floral influences on the red currant, dark cherry and soft earth wisps. The succulent, delicious and impressively concentrated flavors also exude evident minerality on the firm, serious, mouth coating and youthfully austere finale that delivers even better length. This too is excellent and one to look for.
