The 2018 Meursault Poruzots 1er Cru comes courtesy of 0.79 hectares of vine planted between 1972 and 1994. It is well defined on the nose, offering scents of hazelnut and grilled walnut, hints of orange blossom and a very faint menthol notes. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a judicious tang of ginger that lends tension, and impressive depth toward the finish, which lingers in the mouth. Superb.

With the 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots, Jobard´s portfolio takes a step up in density and concentration. Wafting from the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, fresh bread, toasted almonds and white flowers, it´s medium to full-bodied, bright and layered, with tangy acids, chalky extract and an elegant, fine-boned profile. As I wrote last year, given Jobard´s preference for long élevage, I have decided it is more interesting to review his finished wines in bottle rather than attempting to assess them a year into their élevage, when they are sometimes still troubled by suspended lees or otherwise inscrutable. So it was to taste the 2018s that I visited the domaine this year. As readers may remember, Antoine took over from his father, François, in 2004, but the rudiments of winemaking here haven´t changed: long fermentations, protracted sur-lie élevage without stirring, and moderate percentages of new wood are still the order of the day. The 2018s have turned out nicely: supple, charming and open-knit. This is a rare Jobard vintage that might be at its best before its 15th birthday—and even if the wines don´t hit quite the heights that they do in the best years, their accessibility is something that may well be appreciated by readers still waiting, like me, for their Jobard 1989s to attain full maturity.

The nose is presently dominated by hints of reduction and matchstick. More interesting are the powerful, concentrated and muscular flavors that exhibit excellent length on the stony and sappy finish that is presently very tightly wound. Patience will absolutely be required.
