Les Mitans

Les Mitans is a Volnay Premier Cru vineyard in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. A fair number of domaines make red wines from the 4 hectares (10 acres) of Pinot Noir vines here. The name comes from the old French word mitan, meaning middle, or center.

The plot is situated a few hundred meters below and to the east of Volnay village, in the eastern half (the Pommard side) of Volnay’s band of Premier Crus. It faces east-southeast on the gentle lower slopes of the Côte d’Or escarpment at around 250 meters altitude.

Soils are deep brown, dense and rich in clay, with patches of limestone gravel topsoil. The brown color indicates that the soil has a lower iron content than other top Volnay sites such as Caillerets.
